Eligibility:

The EOP String Competition is open to all violin, viola, and cello students who are between the ages of 7-18 and are studying classical music. The eligible age groups are as follows for each instrument (violin, viola, and cello):

1) Junior Division: 7 – 11 years old. Must be no younger than 7 or older than 11 on March 16, 2019.

2) Intermediate Division: 12-14 years old. Must be no older than 14 on March 16, 2019.

3) Senior Division: 15-18 years old. Must be no older than 18 on March 16, 2019.

***1st prize winners of divisions may not compete in that same division; s/he may compete in the next highest division***

 

Competition Repertoire:

All repertoire must be categorized within the classical music genre – arrangements of pop, fiddle, or jazz music will NOT be accepted. Judges reserve the right to hear excerpts from presented works. Memorization is preferred but not required.

Junior Division: Two (2) contrasting pieces.

Intermediate Division: Two (2) contrasting pieces. Preferred: A movement from any concerto and a piece of your choosing.

Senior Division: Two (2) contrasting pieces. Preferred: A movement from any concerto and a piece of your choosing.

ACCOMPANISTS: All works composed with accompaniment must be accompanied and all entrants must provide their own accompanist. If you are in need of recommendations for accompanists, a list can be provided.

GENERAL: Two (2) copies of the published score of both pieces of music (with measures numbered) must be provided to the judges. A list of the pieces (including the correct movement) must be presented with the scores.

 

Judging and Prizes:

Judging of performers will take place starting in the morning of Saturday, October 21. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be awarded for each instrument and age group. Judges may additionally choose one (1) “Honorable Mention” in each group. Trophies will be awarded for each of the three places of each division and category. Every participant will receive a participation certificate.

Judges will include the string faculty of MSU Denver and other professional string players from the Denver metropolitan area. Competitors will receive feedback about their performances from the judges. While the competition is open to the public, no audio or video recording will be permitted during the competition.

Judges reserve the right to stop any performer within/under their allotted time and/or ask to hear different sections of the repertoire being performed.

 

Winners Recital:

Winners chosen from each age group and instrument category will be invited to perform in a Winners Recital to be held on Sunday, March 17, on the Concert Hall stage in the King Center at MSU Denver and presented with a trophy. Each winner will perform one of the two pieces performed during the competition. This recital is free and open to the general public.

Decisions by the judges are final and are not negotiable by the participants, their parents, or their teachers.
